After months of work in the nooks and crannies between running Make Do events, performing my NHS duties and developing products for MKDO I finally got around to shipping the 5th (or 6th, I can’t remember) version of my personal website.
So what changed
There’s a new responsive design (yey!) which is based on a heavily modified version of the awesome Sixteen Nine theme by StudioPress. I re-wrote most of the layout style for this, swapped out the fonts and more importantly changed the responsive breakpoints so the design doesn’t jump to the single-column layout so abruptly on large/medium screens.
There’s also a new ‘Kimb’ logo:
And I’m using my new avatar illustrations wherever possible:
Content killer
Content-wise, it’s all different. I’ve got new pages for about me which took weeks to write and go into a LOT of detail.
I’m also now listing all of my projects, products and businesses and have separated out all of my WordPress consultancy services into a new section.
I also did a real number on my blog, it was brutal:
- Removed half of my old blog posts (over 100)
- Removed over 500 images from my uploads
- Complete re-write of all pages and new structure
This was the bulk of the content work. Deciding what to keep and what to kill. I’ve deleted some posts that got me real traction and SEO boosts but just weren’t in the right context for my vision for the new site. If I’ve deleted anything you liked, sorry, it’s gone and it’s not coming back.
Kimb.me
Finally, you’ll notice a change from the old domain that I’ve had for 10+ years mkjones.co.uk is now simply kimb.me.
I actually played around with the idea of making the switch to kimb.me back in 2008 when I purchased the domain but never took it seriously until now:
mkjones isn’t dead
I’ll be keeping @mkjones for twitter and usernames/persona’s around the web and my emails will also remain [email protected] – it’s JUST my website/blog that has changed.
So that’s it, another new era for my site and I’m really happy with this release. If you want to give me feedback or have found any errors contact me or just leave a comment.
