Remember the Microsoft Courier

October 28, 2012 by Kimb Jones

With the Surface all over the place I did a bit of poking around to find out what happened to the Microsoft Courier which was proposed back in 2008:

Turns out it’s a pretty interesting tale. Remember Xbox king J Allard who criminally lost all his hard worked credibility by being handed the poisoned chalice that was the Zune? Well, the Courier was his baby – and he worked hard to make it happen. But it was dumped by the MS leadership in favour of the Windows 8/Metro model of a ‘tablet OS everywhere’.

Anyway, soon after the Courier was killed, J Allard left Microsoft (something I completely missed) and went on to eventually make a Courier-inspired iPad app called Tapose, see it in action here:

Looks pretty good right? And who knows, maybe a Windows 8/Surface version will be developed one day.
